Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription drug addiction is becoming increasingly common and is often overlooked. Medications designed to treat pain, anxiety, sleep disorders or mental health can lead to physical or psychological addiction over time. This can still happen even when the drugs are prescribed. At ESH Community Rehab we provide medically supported treatment. This supports individuals to safely address prescription drug dependence and begin recovery in our structured residential centre in Warwickshire.

What is Prescription Drugs Addiction?

Many people link addiction to illegal drugs, but growing numbers in the UK are now becoming addicted to prescribed medications instead. This type of addiction is often overlooked because these medications are legal and prescribed by a doctor.

Certain prescription drugs, such as opioids, benzodiazepines, antidepressants and stimulants can interact with the brain’s reward system, creating feelings of pleasure. Over time, the brain adapts to these changes, which can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Addiction can develop even when taking these medicines as prescribed.

Our approach combines medically monitored detox, therapeutic support, and a calm countryside environment — creating the ideal setting for residents to begin their recovery.

As a small, male-only residential rehab centre in Warwickshire, we typically support around six residents at a time. This allows us to offer highly personalised care, with staff who get to know each resident individually. Our experienced team work closely with each person to manage withdrawals safely, understand the emotional and behavioural causes of addiction, and develop practical tools for long-term recovery.

Read all FAQs

  • What is prescription drug addiction?

Prescription drug addiction occurs when someone becomes physically or psychologically dependent on medication prescribed for legitimate medical use. Even when taken as prescribed, some medications can alter brain chemistry. Opioids, benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and stimulants may create cravings, tolerance, and dependence.

  • Which prescription drugs are most likely to cause addiction?

Several medications carry a high risk of dependence, including:

    • Opioids (e.g., codeine, tramadol, morphine)
    • Benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, temazepam, lorazepam)
    • Antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, mirtazapine, sertraline)
    • Stimulants (e.g., dexamphetamine, methylphenidate)

Even over-the-counter medications such as codeine-based painkillers and cough syrups can cause dependency if misused.

  • How does prescription drug addiction develop?

Addiction often begins with genuine medical use. Over time, the body builds tolerance, requiring higher doses to achieve the same effects. As dependence increases, stopping or reducing use can cause withdrawal symptoms, encouraging further use and creating a cycle of addiction.

  • What are the warning signs of prescription drug addiction?

Common behavioural and physical indicators include:

    • Taking higher doses than prescribed
    • Visiting multiple doctors or pharmacies to obtain extra medication
    • Hiding or denying drug use
    • Mood swings, irritability or fatigue
    • Poor concentration and memory problems
    • Withdrawal symptoms when doses are missed
    • Neglecting work, family or personal responsibilities
  • What are the dangers of misusing prescription drugs?

Misuse can lead to serious health consequences such as:

    • Organ damage (liver, kidneys, or heart)
    • Respiratory depression and risk of overdose
    • Seizures or tremors during withdrawal
    • Anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues
    • Cognitive decline and reduced reaction time
    • Fatal overdose when combined with alcohol or sedatives

Because these drugs act on the central nervous system, misuse can be extremely dangerous without medical supervision.

  • What are the withdrawal symptoms of prescription drug addiction?

Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the substance but may include:

    • Anxiety, depression and irritability
    • Insomnia and restlessness
    • Tremors or shaking
    • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
    • Sweating, chills and flu-like symptoms
    • Seizures or severe agitation (especially with benzodiazepines or opioids)

Medical supervision is strongly recommended to ensure safety during detox.

  • How is prescription drug addiction treated at ESH Community Rehab?

Our treatment programmes are person-centred and medically supported. They include:

    • Medically monitored detoxification for safe withdrawal
    • One to one therapy sessions with our BACP accredited counsellors
    • Group therapy and peer support
    • Holistic therapies (mindfulness, relaxation, yoga)
    • Relapse prevention and aftercare planning

This integrated approach supports both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing.

  • Why is professional detox important for prescription drug withdrawal?

Detoxing without medical support can be dangerous, especially for opioids and benzodiazepines, where withdrawal can cause seizures or severe anxiety.

    A professional detox ensures:

    • 24/7 medical monitoring
    • Gradual tapering to minimise symptoms
    • Emotional and psychological support
    • Safe transition into rehabilitation and therapy.

Our Process

  • 1. Initial Pre-Admission Visit

At ESH Community, we encourage all potential residents and families to attend a free no obligation pre-admission visit. This visit is relaxed and informal, giving the individual and families the chance to meet the team, ask questions, and learn more about our detox and rehabilitation programme.

A pre-admission visit also helps people feel more comfortable by seeing the environment, understanding daily routines, and gaining clarity on what residential rehab involves. Many find this step reassuring and helpful when deciding on the right treatment option.

To book a pre-admission visit or speak to a member of the team, contact us via our website, Whatsapp or call 01926 811702.

  • 2. Medically Monitored Detox

When a resident arrives at ESH Community, their treatment begins with a medically monitored detox. This process is overseen by our specialist addiction psychiatrist, who completes a full assessment before prescribing an individual detox plan tailored to the resident’s needs.

A typical detox lasts around 7–8 days, although this may vary depending on the substance involved and the person’s health history. Throughout this period, our trained staff provide 24/7 monitoring, reassurance, and practical support to ensure safety and comfort at every stage.

Our focus is to make detox as calm, dignified, and manageable as possible, creating a stable foundation for the therapeutic rehabilitation work that follows.

  • 3. Residential Rehabilitation Program

Once detox is complete, residents begin a structured rehabilitation programme designed to support emotional, psychological, and physical recovery. Each resident receives two one-to-one counselling sessions per week with an accredited BACP counsellor, alongside daily therapeutic group sessions. These sessions help individuals explore the underlying causes of addiction, including thinking patterns, behaviours, and emotional triggers.

In the evenings, residents attend local AA/NA fellowship meetings to build early connections within the recovery community and begin developing long-term peer support networks.

This structured approach helps rebuild routine, purpose, and accountability — elements often disrupted during active addiction — while supporting long-term, sustainable recovery.

  • 4. Holistic Therapies and Activities

Alongside therapeutic work, residents also take part in gentle physical and wellbeing activities designed to improve both physical and emotional health. These include yoga, tai chi, personal training sessions, and countryside walks — all helping to restore routine, confidence, and motivation.

Each week, residents also take part in our dedicated “Spiritual Day”, where they are introduced to meditation, breathwork, and acupuncture. These activities support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and help individuals reconnect with themselves in a calm and grounded way.

This holistic approach complements the therapeutic programme and supports the development of healthy lifestyle habits that can be carried into long-term recovery.

  • 5. Family Awareness and Guidance

Family involvement begins from the very first point of contact. Addiction affects not only the individual, but the wider family system — and in many cases, it is family members who reach out to us first. From that moment, we offer guidance, reassurance, and information to help families understand the recovery process for the individual and what to expect.

As the resident approaches the end of their placement, we arrange a dedicated family call involving the key people in their life. This conversation focuses on preparing for life after rehab, setting healthy boundaries, managing expectations, and understanding how best to support a loved one in early recovery.

Our relationship with families does not end when the resident leaves, we remain available for ongoing awareness and guidance helping both the resident and their family to continue building stability, trust, and long-term recovery together.

  • 6. Aftercare and Ongoing Support

Aftercare is a core part of the support we provide at ESH Community. Every resident receives two follow-up counselling sessions after leaving the programme to help with the transition back into day-to-day life and maintain the progress made during treatment.

We also run a weekly Tuesday evening aftercare group at the rehab, open to all former residents. This provides a safe space to return, reconnect, and receive continued support. These sessions are extremely valuable not only for those attending, but also for current residents, who benefit from hearing the experiences of people who have been exactly where they are now.

In addition, past residents can request further one-to-one support if needed, ensuring nobody feels alone in their recovery journey. Our team also remains available by phone 24/7 should someone require guidance, reassurance, or help during difficult moments.

Our aftercare programme helps build long-term stability, confidence, and connection — supporting recovery well beyond the time spent in treatment.

Withdrawal Concerns

Withdrawal from prescription drugs can be extremely challenging and in some cases, dangerous without professional supervision. For substances such as opioids or benzodiazepines, medical detox is essential to ensure safety and minimise risks.
