Benzodiazepine Addiction
Long term benzodiazepine use can lead to dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms. It is often used to manage anxiety and sleep problems but can sometimes lead to reliance if used for a long period of time. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous, so professional help is essential. At ESH Community Rehab, we offer safe, structured support for benzodiazepine addiction. We focus on medical supervision and emotional wellbeing.
What Are Benzodiazepines?
Benzodiazepines (often called “benzos”) are prescription medications used to treat anxiety, insomnia, seizures and alcohol withdrawal. They work by increasing the calming effects of a brain chemical called GABA, which reduces activity in the nervous system.
While they can be effective when prescribed short-term, misuse or long-term use can quickly lead to dependence and addiction.
Detox & Rehab Packages at ESH Community
At ESH Community, we provide safe, structured, and person-centred detox and rehabilitation programmes for individuals seeking help with alcohol addiction, drug dependence, and other substance-related issues. Our approach combines medically monitored detox, therapeutic support, and a calm countryside environment — creating the ideal setting for residents to begin their recovery.
As a small, male-only residential rehab centre in Warwickshire, we typically support around six residents at a time. This allows us to offer highly personalised care, with staff who get to know each resident individually. Our experienced team work closely with each person to manage withdrawals safely, understand the emotional and behavioural causes of addiction, and develop practical tools for long-term recovery.

- What are benzodiazepines, and how do they cause addiction?
Benzodiazepines (often called benzos) are medications used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. They work by slowing down brain activity and producing a sense of calm. When used for too long or in high doses, the brain becomes dependent on the drug. It needs to manage stress or sleep, leading to tolerance, dependence and addiction.
- What are the signs of benzodiazepine addiction?
Benzodiazepine addiction can develop gradually, even when medication is prescribed by a doctor. Common signs include:
- Needing higher doses to achieve the same effect
- Cravings or compulsive urges to take the medication
- Feeling anxious, restless or unwell without it
- Memory problems or confusion
- Dizziness, blurred vision or poor coordination
- Withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop
- Continuing use despite health, relationship or work problems
If these symptoms sound familiar, professional treatment is essential for safe recovery.
- Are benzodiazepines dangerous to stop suddenly?
Yes. Suddenly stopping benzodiazepines can be dangerous and in some cases, life-threatening. Withdrawal symptoms can include severe anxiety, panic attacks, seizures, hallucinations and insomnia.
At ESH Community Rehab, detox is carried out under medical supervision, ensuring safety, stability and comfort throughout the process.
- What are the withdrawal symptoms of benzodiazepine addiction?
Withdrawal symptoms can be both physical and psychological. Common effects include:
- Anxiety, agitation, and restlessness
- Insomnia and fatigue
- Tremors and muscle pain
- Seizures or hallucinations in severe cases
- “Electric shock” sensations or metallic tastes
- Prolonged withdrawal lasting for weeks or months
Because withdrawal can be unpredictable, it is vital to undergo medically managed detox with ongoing clinical support.
- How long does benzodiazepine detox take?
The detox process varies depending on the type of benzodiazepine, duration of use and dosage. In most cases, detox is gradual and may take 2 to 4 weeks or longer for the body to safely adjust.
At ESH Community, detox plans are tailored to each resident’s medical and emotional needs to ensure a safe and effective transition into rehabilitation.
- What treatment does ESH Community offer for benzodiazepine addiction?
Our comprehensive, person-centred programme supports every stage of recovery. Treatment includes:

- Why is professional help important for benzodiazepine addiction?
Attempting to quit benzodiazepines without medical support can be dangerous due to severe withdrawal symptoms. Professional treatment ensures safe detoxification and emotional support. It also provides therapy that addresses the underlying causes of addiction rather than just the symptoms.

Risks of Benzodiazepine Addiction
Misuse or long-term use of benzodiazepines can cause serious health risks, such as:
- Severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures (which can be life-threatening).
- Memory loss and problems with concentration.
- Increased anxiety, depression or mood swings.
- Physical symptoms like dizziness, muscle weakness and coordination problems.
- High risk of overdose, especially if combined with alcohol or other drugs.
Benzodiazepine Withdrawal
Withdrawing from benzodiazepines is extremely challenging and potentially dangerous. Symptoms can include:
- Insomnia, agitation and anxiety.
- Seizures or hallucinations.
- “Electric shock” sensations or metallic taste.
- Long-lasting symptoms that may continue for weeks or months.
Because withdrawal can be severe, it should never be attempted alone. Medical supervision is essential for safety.
Our Process
- 1. Initial Pre-Admission Visit
At ESH Community, we encourage all potential residents and families to attend a free no obligation pre-admission visit. This visit is relaxed and informal, giving the individual and families the chance to meet the team, ask questions, and learn more about our detox and rehabilitation programme.
A pre-admission visit also helps people feel more comfortable by seeing the environment, understanding daily routines, and gaining clarity on what residential rehab involves. Many find this step reassuring and helpful when deciding on the right treatment option.
To book a pre-admission visit or speak to a member of the team, contact us via our website, Whatsapp or call 01926 811702.
- 2. Medically Monitored Detox
When a resident arrives at ESH Community, their treatment begins with a medically monitored detox. This process is overseen by our specialist addiction psychiatrist, who completes a full assessment before prescribing an individual detox plan tailored to the resident’s needs.
A typical detox lasts around 7–8 days, although this may vary depending on the substance involved and the person’s health history. Throughout this period, our trained staff provide 24/7 monitoring, reassurance, and practical support to ensure safety and comfort at every stage.
Our focus is to make detox as calm, dignified, and manageable as possible, creating a stable foundation for the therapeutic rehabilitation work that follows.
- 3. Residential Rehabilitation Program
Once detox is complete, residents begin a structured rehabilitation programme designed to support emotional, psychological, and physical recovery. Each resident receives two one-to-one counselling sessions per week with an accredited BACP counsellor, alongside daily therapeutic group sessions. These sessions help individuals explore the underlying causes of addiction, including thinking patterns, behaviours, and emotional triggers.
In the evenings, residents attend local AA/NA fellowship meetings to build early connections within the recovery community and begin developing long-term peer support networks.
This structured approach helps rebuild routine, purpose, and accountability — elements often disrupted during active addiction — while supporting long-term, sustainable recovery.
- 4. Holistic Therapies and Activities
Alongside therapeutic work, residents also take part in gentle physical and wellbeing activities designed to improve both physical and emotional health. These include yoga, tai chi, personal training sessions, and countryside walks — all helping to restore routine, confidence, and motivation.
Each week, residents also take part in our dedicated “Spiritual Day”, where they are introduced to meditation, breathwork, and acupuncture. These activities support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and help individuals reconnect with themselves in a calm and grounded way.
This holistic approach complements the therapeutic programme and supports the development of healthy lifestyle habits that can be carried into long-term recovery.
- 5. Family Awareness and Guidance
Family involvement begins from the very first point of contact. Addiction affects not only the individual, but the wider family system — and in many cases, it is family members who reach out to us first. From that moment, we offer guidance, reassurance, and information to help families understand the recovery process for the individual and what to expect.
As the resident approaches the end of their placement, we arrange a dedicated family call involving the key people in their life. This conversation focuses on preparing for life after rehab, setting healthy boundaries, managing expectations, and understanding how best to support a loved one in early recovery.
Our relationship with families does not end when the resident leaves, we remain available for ongoing awareness and guidance helping both the resident and their family to continue building stability, trust, and long-term recovery together.
- 6. Aftercare and Ongoing Support
Aftercare is a core part of the support we provide at ESH Community. Every resident receives two follow-up counselling sessions after leaving the programme to help with the transition back into day-to-day life and maintain the progress made during treatment.
We also run a weekly Tuesday evening aftercare group at the rehab, open to all former residents. This provides a safe space to return, reconnect, and receive continued support. These sessions are extremely valuable not only for those attending, but also for current residents, who benefit from hearing the experiences of people who have been exactly where they are now.
In addition, past residents can request further one-to-one support if needed, ensuring nobody feels alone in their recovery journey. Our team also remains available by phone 24/7 should someone require guidance, reassurance, or help during difficult moments.
Our aftercare programme helps build long-term stability, confidence, and connection — supporting recovery well beyond the time spent in treatment.
