Co-codamol Addiction
While co-codamol has a medical use as a pain killer it has a high risk of addiction, due to its codeine content. Repeated use can lead to physical dependence and have serious health risks. ESH Community Rehab provides professional support to aid people to safely address co-codamol addiction and begin recovery.
What Is Co-codamol?
Co-codamol is a prescription painkiller that combines paracetamol and codeine. Paracetamol blocks chemical messengers in the brain that signal pain. Codeine (an opiate) works on the central nervous system to block pain signals. Together, they provide stronger pain relief than paracetamol alone.
Although effective for short-term pain, co-codamol carries a high risk of misuse and addiction, particularly because of its codeine content.

FAQs
Have a question? Browse our frequently asked questions for more information. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, contact our friendly team today.
- What is Co-codamol and how does it work?
Co-codamol is a prescription painkiller that combines paracetamol and codeine. Paracetamol reduces pain signals in the brain. Codeine (an opioid) acts on the central nervous system to relieve pain and create feelings of calm. Although effective for short-term pain management, prolonged or excessive use can lead to dependence and addiction due to the codeine component.
- How does Co-codamol addiction develop?
Addiction develops when regular or high-dose use causes the body and brain to depend on codeine to function normally. Over time, users need increasing amounts to achieve the same effects (tolerance). They may experience withdrawal symptoms when they try to stop. This cycle of relief and withdrawal can quickly lead to physical and psychological addiction.
- What are the signs of Co-codamol addiction?
Addiction to Co-codamol can show in both behavioural and physical changes, such as:
- Visiting multiple pharmacies to obtain tablets
- Hiding or stockpiling medication
- Withdrawing from family or social activities
- Neglecting responsibilities or work
- Mood swings, anxiety or irritability
- Slurred speech, drowsiness or pinpoint pupils
- Constipation or stomach pain
- What are the risks of Co-codamol misuse?
Misusing Co-codamol can lead to serious health issues, including:
- Liver damage caused by excess paracetamol intake
- Respiratory depression from codeine overdose
- Severe dependence and withdrawal symptoms
- Overdose, especially when mixed with alcohol or other sedatives
- Cognitive impairment, confusion and fatigue
Because of these risks, Co-codamol should only ever be used as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
- What are the withdrawal symptoms of Co-codamol addiction?
Withdrawal symptoms can begin within hours of stopping and vary in severity depending on the level of use. Common symptoms include:
- Restlessness, agitation, or anxiety
- Sweating, chills, or shaking
- Trouble sleeping or fatigue
- Muscle pain and nausea
- Panic attacks or mood swings
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Medical supervision during detox helps manage these symptoms safely and comfortably.
- What treatment does ESH Community offer for Co-Codamol addiction?
Our treatment programmes are tailored to individual needs and focus on holistic recovery. They include:
- Medically monitored detox to manage withdrawal safely
- One to one therapy sessions with our BACP accredited counsellors
- Group therapy for peer understanding and shared recovery
- Holistic wellbeing activities such as mindfulness and exercise
- Relapse prevention and aftercare planning
Our approach combines clinical care with compassion and lived experience of recovery.
- How long does Co-codamol detox take?
Detox length depends on the individual’s health, dosage, and duration of use. Most people require 7–14 days for the initial withdrawal period, followed by further emotional and therapeutic support. At ESH Community Rehab, detox is carried out under medical supervision, ensuring both physical and psychological stability throughout recovery.
- Why is professional help important?
Quitting Co-codamol suddenly can be unsafe and often leads to relapse. Professional treatment ensures you receive medical oversight, psychological support, and therapeutic interventions tailored to your needs. This gives you the best chance of achieving lasting recovery.

Risks of Co-codamol Misuse
- Allergic reactions: In rare cases, co-codamol can trigger anaphylaxis, a severe and life-threatening reaction requiring urgent medical care.
- Liver damage: Excessive use increases the risk of liver damage from paracetamol, which may be irreversible.
- Dependence: Regular misuse can lead to physical dependence, withdrawal symptoms and long-term health risks.
Our Process
- 1. Initial Pre-Admission Visit
At ESH Community, we encourage all potential residents and families to attend a free no obligation pre-admission visit. This visit is relaxed and informal, giving the individual and families the chance to meet the team, ask questions, and learn more about our detox and rehabilitation programme.
A pre-admission visit also helps people feel more comfortable by seeing the environment, understanding daily routines, and gaining clarity on what residential rehab involves. Many find this step reassuring and helpful when deciding on the right treatment option.
To book a pre-admission visit or speak to a member of the team, contact us via our website, Whatsapp or call 01926 811702.
- 2. Medically Monitored Detox
When a resident arrives at ESH Community, their treatment begins with a medically monitored detox. This process is overseen by our specialist addiction psychiatrist, who completes a full assessment before prescribing an individual detox plan tailored to the resident’s needs.
A typical detox lasts around 7–8 days, although this may vary depending on the substance involved and the person’s health history. Throughout this period, our trained staff provide 24/7 monitoring, reassurance, and practical support to ensure safety and comfort at every stage.
Our focus is to make detox as calm, dignified, and manageable as possible, creating a stable foundation for the therapeutic rehabilitation work that follows.
- 3. Residential Rehabilitation Program
Once detox is complete, residents begin a structured rehabilitation programme designed to support emotional, psychological, and physical recovery. Each resident receives two one-to-one counselling sessions per week with an accredited BACP counsellor, alongside daily therapeutic group sessions. These sessions help individuals explore the underlying causes of addiction, including thinking patterns, behaviours, and emotional triggers.
In the evenings, residents attend local AA/NA fellowship meetings to build early connections within the recovery community and begin developing long-term peer support networks.
This structured approach helps rebuild routine, purpose, and accountability — elements often disrupted during active addiction — while supporting long-term, sustainable recovery.
- 4. Holistic Therapies and Activities
Alongside therapeutic work, residents also take part in gentle physical and wellbeing activities designed to improve both physical and emotional health. These include yoga, tai chi, personal training sessions, and countryside walks — all helping to restore routine, confidence, and motivation.
Each week, residents also take part in our dedicated “Spiritual Day”, where they are introduced to meditation, breathwork, and acupuncture. These activities support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and help individuals reconnect with themselves in a calm and grounded way.
This holistic approach complements the therapeutic programme and supports the development of healthy lifestyle habits that can be carried into long-term recovery.
- 5. Family Awareness and Guidance
Family involvement begins from the very first point of contact. Addiction affects not only the individual, but the wider family system — and in many cases, it is family members who reach out to us first. From that moment, we offer guidance, reassurance, and information to help families understand the recovery process for the individual and what to expect.
As the resident approaches the end of their placement, we arrange a dedicated family call involving the key people in their life. This conversation focuses on preparing for life after rehab, setting healthy boundaries, managing expectations, and understanding how best to support a loved one in early recovery.
Our relationship with families does not end when the resident leaves, we remain available for ongoing awareness and guidance helping both the resident and their family to continue building stability, trust, and long-term recovery together.
- 6. Aftercare and Ongoing Support
Aftercare is a core part of the support we provide at ESH Community. Every resident receives two follow-up counselling sessions after leaving the programme to help with the transition back into day-to-day life and maintain the progress made during treatment.
We also run a weekly Tuesday evening aftercare group at the rehab, open to all former residents. This provides a safe space to return, reconnect, and receive continued support. These sessions are extremely valuable not only for those attending, but also for current residents, who benefit from hearing the experiences of people who have been exactly where they are now.
In addition, past residents can request further one-to-one support if needed, ensuring nobody feels alone in their recovery journey. Our team also remains available by phone 24/7 should someone require guidance, reassurance, or help during difficult moments.
Our aftercare programme helps build long-term stability, confidence, and connection — supporting recovery well beyond the time spent in treatment.
