Mephedrone Addiction

Using mephedrone comes with serious risks due to its stimulant effects and uncertain purity. It is often seen like other ‘party drugs’ and can lead to dependency, mental health issues and even physical harm. ESH Community Rehab provides medically supported treatment for people struggling with mephedrone addiction, supporting them to stabilise safely and begin their recovery in our residential centre in Warwickshire.

What is Mephedrone Addiction?

Mephedrone (sometimes called ‘meow meow’) is a powerful stimulant that belongs to the same family of drugs as amphetamines, such as speed and ecstasy. Because it is a relatively new drug, there is still limited research on its long-term effects. However, because it is similar to other stimulants, the risks may be comparable. These include dependency, mental health issues and long-term physical harm.

There have already been reports of hospitalisations and even deaths linked to mephedrone use. Another major risk is users can never be certain whether what they are buying is genuinely mephedrone or another dangerous substance.

Read all FAQs

  • What is mephedrone addiction?

Mephedrone addiction occurs when repeated use of the stimulant causes physical dependence and psychological cravings. Over time, users may rely on the drug for confidence, energy, or mood enhancement. This leads to compulsive use and withdrawal symptoms when they stop. Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant similar to cocaine and amphetamines, and its effects can be both intense and dangerous.

  • What are the short-term effects of mephedrone?

Short-term effects can feel pleasurable but are often followed by severe physical and mental crashes. Common effects include:

    • Euphoria, sociability and alertness
    • Increased energy and talkativeness
    • Dilated pupils and elevated heart rate
    • Teeth grinding, sweating and insomnia
    • Paranoia, anxiety and agitation

These effects can last for about an hour, but the ‘comedown’ can be distressing and trigger repeated use.

  • What are the risks of using mephedrone?

Mephedrone use carries significant physical and psychological risks, including:

    • Heart strain, circulatory problems and overheating
    • Severe anxiety, panic attacks or hallucinations
    • Nosebleeds and nasal damage from snorting
    • Risk of overdose when mixed with other stimulants or alcohol
    • Infections such as Hepatitis C or HIV when injected or shared
    • Unknown purity, as illegal mephedrone often contains dangerous cutting agents
  • Is mephedrone addictive?

Yes. Mephedrone is highly addictive, both psychologically and behaviourally. The short-lived effects create a strong urge to re-dose, quickly leading to a cycle of craving, use, and withdrawal. Over time, this pattern can cause dependency, exhaustion and serious mental health deterioration.

  • What are the withdrawal symptoms of mephedrone addiction?

Mephedrone withdrawal can be intense and emotionally challenging.

    Psychological symptoms:

    • Cravings and agitation
    • Anxiety and depression
    • Insomnia or vivid nightmares
    • Paranoia or hallucinations

    Physical symptoms:

    • Fatigue and muscle aches
    • Headaches or jaw pain
    • Heart palpitations
    • Loss of appetite and dehydration

Because of the risk of psychological distress, withdrawal should always be managed under medical supervision.

  • What are the dangers of mixing mephedrone with alcohol or other drugs?

Combining mephedrone with alcohol, cocaine or other stimulants dramatically increases the risk of heart failure, seizures and death. These combinations also worsen dehydration, overheating and mental confusion. Mixing stimulants masks the effects of each drug, which can lead to accidental overdose.

  • What is the legal status of mephedrone in the UK?

Mephedrone is classified as a Class B controlled drug.

    • Possession: Up to 5 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
    • Supply or production: Up to 14 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.

Even supplying it to friends is considered dealing under UK law. Driving under the influence of mephedrone is also illegal and can result in a ban, fine or imprisonment.

  • How is mephedrone addiction treated at ESH Community Rehab?

At ESH Community Rehab, treatment focuses on both detoxification and rehabilitation. Our structured programmes include:

    • Medically monitored detox with 24/7 clinical supervision
    • One-to-one counselling and group therapy
    • One to one therapy sessions with our BACP accredited counsellors
    • Holistic activities such as mindfulness, yoga, and relaxation
    • Relapse prevention and aftercare planning

This approach helps residents manage withdrawal safely and build long-term recovery strategies.

  • Why is professional detox important for mephedrone withdrawal?

Withdrawal from mephedrone can trigger severe depression, anxiety or paranoia, which can become overwhelming without professional support.

    A medically supervised detox ensures:

    • 24/7 medical and emotional support
    • Safe management of physical symptoms
    • Psychological care to prevent relapse
    • Structured transition into long-term therapy and recovery.
  • How long does mephedrone recovery take?

The duration of recovery varies depending on factors such as frequency of use, dosage and personal health. Detox may take several days to a week, followed by rehabilitation and therapy for several weeks. This is to address underlying causes and coping mechanisms. ESH Community offers flexible 14, 21, and 28-day programmes, with options to extend where needed.

Mephedrone Effects & Risks

  • Users have reported blue or cold fingers, likely caused by its effect on circulation.
  • There have been deaths linked to mephedrone, including six reported in England and Wales in 2011.
  • Severe nosebleeds have occurred after snorting.
  • Overheating can be fatal, especially when combined with other drugs such as ecstasy.
  • Injecting mephedrone is extremely dangerous and carries a high risk of overdose, vein and artery damage, ulcers and even gangrene.
  • Sharing injecting equipment increases the risk of contracting Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS.
  • Purity is inconsistent. Research suggests that mephedrone sold illegally may be only around 50% pure, meaning harmful cutting agents also enter the bloodstream.

Mephedrone & Alcohol

Combining mephedrone with alcohol, or any other drug, significantly increases the risks, including the risk of sudden death.

Mephedrone & The Law

  • Mephedrone is a Class B drug, making it illegal to possess, supply or produce.
  • Possession can result in up to five years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
  • Supplying (even to a friend) can result in up to 14 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine.
  • A drug conviction can seriously affect travel opportunities (e.g., entry to the USA) and future employment.

Driving under the influence is also illegal and can lead to fines, driving bans or imprisonment, even the following day if you are still impaired.

Our Process

  • 1. Initial Pre-Admission Visit

At ESH Community, we encourage all potential residents and families to attend a free no obligation pre-admission visit. This visit is relaxed and informal, giving the individual and families the chance to meet the team, ask questions, and learn more about our detox and rehabilitation programme.

A pre-admission visit also helps people feel more comfortable by seeing the environment, understanding daily routines, and gaining clarity on what residential rehab involves. Many find this step reassuring and helpful when deciding on the right treatment option.

To book a pre-admission visit or speak to a member of the team, contact us via our website, Whatsapp or call 01926 811702.

  • 2. Medically Monitored Detox

When a resident arrives at ESH Community, their treatment begins with a medically monitored detox. This process is overseen by our specialist addiction psychiatrist, who completes a full assessment before prescribing an individual detox plan tailored to the resident’s needs.

A typical detox lasts around 7–8 days, although this may vary depending on the substance involved and the person’s health history. Throughout this period, our trained staff provide 24/7 monitoring, reassurance, and practical support to ensure safety and comfort at every stage.

Our focus is to make detox as calm, dignified, and manageable as possible, creating a stable foundation for the therapeutic rehabilitation work that follows.

  • 3. Residential Rehabilitation Program

Once detox is complete, residents begin a structured rehabilitation programme designed to support emotional, psychological, and physical recovery. Each resident receives two one-to-one counselling sessions per week with an accredited BACP counsellor, alongside daily therapeutic group sessions. These sessions help individuals explore the underlying causes of addiction, including thinking patterns, behaviours, and emotional triggers.

In the evenings, residents attend local AA/NA fellowship meetings to build early connections within the recovery community and begin developing long-term peer support networks.

This structured approach helps rebuild routine, purpose, and accountability — elements often disrupted during active addiction — while supporting long-term, sustainable recovery.

  • 4. Holistic Therapies and Activities

Alongside therapeutic work, residents also take part in gentle physical and wellbeing activities designed to improve both physical and emotional health. These include yoga, tai chi, personal training sessions, and countryside walks — all helping to restore routine, confidence, and motivation.

Each week, residents also take part in our dedicated “Spiritual Day”, where they are introduced to meditation, breathwork, and acupuncture. These activities support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and help individuals reconnect with themselves in a calm and grounded way.

This holistic approach complements the therapeutic programme and supports the development of healthy lifestyle habits that can be carried into long-term recovery.

  • 5. Family Awareness and Guidance

Family involvement begins from the very first point of contact. Addiction affects not only the individual, but the wider family system — and in many cases, it is family members who reach out to us first. From that moment, we offer guidance, reassurance, and information to help families understand the recovery process for the individual and what to expect.

As the resident approaches the end of their placement, we arrange a dedicated family call involving the key people in their life. This conversation focuses on preparing for life after rehab, setting healthy boundaries, managing expectations, and understanding how best to support a loved one in early recovery.

Our relationship with families does not end when the resident leaves, we remain available for ongoing awareness and guidance helping both the resident and their family to continue building stability, trust, and long-term recovery together.

  • 6. Aftercare and Ongoing Support

Aftercare is a core part of the support we provide at ESH Community. Every resident receives two follow-up counselling sessions after leaving the programme to help with the transition back into day-to-day life and maintain the progress made during treatment.

We also run a weekly Tuesday evening aftercare group at the rehab, open to all former residents. This provides a safe space to return, reconnect, and receive continued support. These sessions are extremely valuable not only for those attending, but also for current residents, who benefit from hearing the experiences of people who have been exactly where they are now.

In addition, past residents can request further one-to-one support if needed, ensuring nobody feels alone in their recovery journey. Our team also remains available by phone 24/7 should someone require guidance, reassurance, or help during difficult moments.

Our aftercare programme helps build long-term stability, confidence, and connection — supporting recovery well beyond the time spent in treatment.
