Starting Your Recovery Journey at ESH Community
Deciding to seek help for addiction can be one of the most difficult and courageous choices a person ever makes. For many people, the thought of arriving at rehab brings a mixture of hope, anxiety and uncertainty. This is why the Pre-Admission process is important, as it helps ease some of the nerves and settle the resident’s mind during the first 24 hours at rehab.
One of the questions we are most commonly asked at ESH Community is: “What will happen when I arrive?”
While every resident’s journey is unique, the first 24 hours are designed to help you feel safe, comfortable and supported as you begin your recovery.
A Warm Welcome from Our Team
Upon arrival, residents are welcomed by a member of the ESH Community team who will guide them through the admission process.
This includes completing essential paperwork, health checks, as well as discussing an individual’s needs and answering any questions residents or their loved ones may have. The process usually takes around an hour and helps ensure that each resident receives the support they need from day one.
Following admission, residents spend some one-to-one time with staff to help them settle in and become familiar with their new surroundings.
Detox
Following admission to ESH, our management team will liaise with our consultant psychiatrist to assess each individual’s needs and determine the most appropriate detoxification plan. Every detox programme is tailored to the individual and approved by our consultant psychiatrist.
Ensuring that any required medication is prescribed correctly within the first 24 hours helps make the transition into residential treatment as safe, comfortable, and effective as possible. We aim to provide a smooth and supportive start to the recovery journey.
Settling into Rehab
Once admission is complete, residents are shown to their room, introduced to other members of the community and supported through the next steps of their treatment plan.
For those requiring a medically monitored detox, observations and monitoring begin during this time to ensure safety and comfort.
Food, drinks and staff support are available throughout the day, helping residents focus on settling in rather than worrying about practical concerns.
Taking Away the Fear of the Unknown
It’s completely normal to feel nervous during the first day in rehab.
Many residents arrive feeling anxious, emotionally drained or uncertain about what lies ahead. At ESH Community, there is no pressure to immediately share personal experiences or engage in anything before they feel ready.
The focus during the first 24 hours is simple: helping residents feel safe, supported and reassured.
Our team takes the time to explain what the coming days will look like and ensure that every resident understands the detox and recovery process.
Finding Support from Others
One of the biggest surprises for many new residents is how quickly they begin to feel at ease.
Speaking with other residents and staff who have faced similar challenges can provide reassurance and hope. The shared understanding within the community often helps reduce feelings of isolation and uncertainty.
Many former residents tell us that the anxiety they felt before arriving was far greater than the reality of their first day.
Evening and Overnight Care
As the day progresses, detox medication (where prescribed) will usually begin to take effect, helping residents feel more comfortable.
Evenings are typically spent resting, relaxing and adjusting to the new environment. Staff remain available throughout the night to provide reassurance, support and ongoing monitoring where required.
With 24-hour support available, residents can feel confident that help is always close by.
Every Recovery Journey Starts with a First Step
The first 24 hours in rehab are not about pressure or expectations. They are about creating a safe foundation for recovery and helping individuals take those important first steps towards lasting change.
At ESH Community, our goal is to ensure that every resident feels welcomed, valued and supported from the moment they arrive.
